Baseball Rallies Past ETSU 4-3 - UNC Asheville Bulldogs Official Athletics Site

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - UNC Asheville scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally for its third straight victory with a 4-3 win at East Tennessee State on Wednesday night.

Steve Burnich who went 2-for-4 got the rally started with a one out single to right field off ETSU (18-10) closer Caleb Glafenhein (8-2). Kevin Mattison was hit by a pitch and Matt Henson who had three hits on the night singled through the right side to score Burnich and move Mattison to third base. David Williams hit a slow ground ball to shortstop that was booted by Justin Tramble. Mattison scored to tie the game. Rob Vernon extended his hit streak to 11 straight games with the game-winning hit up the middle that scored Henson.

Ben Buchanan pitched the final 2.1 innings to record his second victory of the season.

ETSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Ryan Self doubled to lead off and scored on a double by CJ Lee. Lee stole third but was left stranded.

Lee was hit by a pitch in the fourth, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error to make the score 2-1.

Asheville (10-18) got on the board in the sixth. Justin Schumer doubled with two outs and scored on a RBI single by Burnich to cut the lead to 2-1.

Lee go the Buccaneers going again in the seventh. He led off with a single. Anthony Russell was hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Troy Mendez singled home Lee to put ETSU ahead 3-1.

The Bucs lost for just the second time when leading after five innings and the Bulldogs won for the first time when trailing after eight innings.

Asheville will return to conference play on Friday when it begins a three-game series at Winthrop in a 6 p.m. game.
