LYNCHUBURG, VA. - Liberty scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and used strong pitching to defeat UNC Asheville, 5-1 in Big South Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Worthington Field.
The Bulldogs (5-15, 0-1 BSC) were limited to just seven hits by two Liberty pitchers. Asheville was led at the plate by Matt Henson and Steve Burnich who each had two hits. Henson drove in the Bulldogs' only run of the day with a fielders' choice in the sixth.
Tim Nanry led the Flames attack as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Alan DeRatt (1-2) was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Asheville. He allowed just seven hits and four runs in six innings of work. DeRatt struck out six and walked one.
The Bulldogs threatened in the eighth and ninth innings as they put two runners on in each inning but could not get the big hit.
The teams will play the second game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The teams finish up the series on Monday at a time to be determined.
