BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball will look for its first victory of the season as it travels to Campbell University to begin a three-game series on Friday at 3 p.m.
Alan DeRatt (0-1) will take to the mound for UNC Asheville (0-3) against Blake Herring (0-1) in game one. The series will conclude on Saturday with a double header beginning at Noon. Saturday's pitchers have not been announced.
Both teams will be looking for their first victories of the season. Asheville was swept by No. 10 Florida State last weekend. The Seminoles outscored the Bulldogs 44-14 in the series. Elliott Arrington had a good opening weekend with the bat for the Bulldogs as he went 5-for-13 with three RBI. Rob Vernon had two of Asheville's five extra base hits last weekend including the first home run of the season. Matt Henson had a hit in all three games going 3-for-10 in the series.
"We saw some good things in Tallahassee last weekend," said Asheville head coach Willie Stewart. "We were not quite as sharp as we needed to be to win but FSU is a very good team that already had three games under its belts. I was pleased with the way we hit the ball off of three good ACC arms. This weekend we hope to put the offense and defense together and win a series."
Campbell (0-2) dropped a pair of games to Charlotte15-6 and 8-0 last weekend. The Camels scored five runs in the first inning of game one but could only manage one run the rest of the series. Campbell was scheduled to play Big South foe Charleston Southern on Tuesday but that game was rained out.
Campbell went 19-38 a year leads the all-time series against UNC Asheville18-10. Last season the two teams played for the first time in 12 years at Greenwood Field in Asheville. The Bulldogs swept the two-game series 6-3 and 7-1.
