BIRMINGHAM, AL. - Elif Unlu recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Ashley Greer had 13 kills as UNC Asheville rolled to a 3-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the Bulldogs opening match of the Samford Invitational. Asheville won the match by the scores of 30-20, 30-23, 30-27.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak by the Bulldogs (2-10). UNC Asheville was in complete control of the match and led throughout.
"We played pretty well today, but we'll have to play better tomorrow," commented Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "Elif did a nice job and Ashley really hit the ball well. We were able to take advantage of their (ULM) mistakes and get the job done."
The Bulldogs will play twice on Saturday as they'll take on Charlotte at 10:30 a.m. before playing host Samford at 8 p.m. EST.
Ashley Wrightenberry had six kills and three blocks in the victory. Freshman Lauren Ficker finished with five kills and six digs. The Bulldogs had 51 digs in the match, compared to just 36 for the Warhawks.
"It's just nice to get a win," commented Torbett. "We're working hard and hopefully we're going to starting finding ways to win more matches. Today was a start."
