ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kristal Hood scored 20 points, while Ashton Barton added 16 points to lead UNC Asheville to a 64-60 come-from-behind victory over Campbell Saturday afternoon at Justice Center.
The Bulldogs are 2-0 for the first time since the 1988-89 season. Asheville finished 2-0 in the Carolina First Classic, along with Norfolk State. Norfolk State defeated Jacksonville earlier in the day, 79-68.
Campbell (0-2) was led by Letitia Dickson with a game-high 23 points. She went 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Jennifer Lodge and Lynisha Ochogu added 10 points each.
"This is a good win for our program," commented Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "We played terrific defense down the stretch and made a great comeback to win the game."
The Bulldogs had controlled most of the first half and led 30-19 late in the half before the Camels went on an 8-0 run to end the half, cutting the lead to 30-27.
In the second half, Campbell went on a 12-2 run midway through to give the Camels a 52-46 lead. A three-point play from Dickson gave Campbell the six-point lead at the 7:19 mark. The Camels' lead grew to seven at 56-49 on two free throws from Lodge with 5:27 remaining.
But the Bulldogs turned up the defense and responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to roar to a 62-56 lead. Barton scored the first four points of the run before a lay-up from Stacy Shepard put Asheville in front to stay, 57-56 with 2:43 left.
Hood scored on a drive to the basket to push the lead to 59-56 at the 1:34 mark. Barton then finished the run with an exclamation point when she sank a three-pointer with 1:00 left to give the Bulldogs a 62-56 lead.
Campbell closed to 62-60 on a trey from Dickson with 12 seconds remaining. Barton finished off the victory by hitting two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 64-60 lead.
"We've got to learn to put teams away in the first half," commented Blose. "We built a good lead last night (against Jacksonville) but allowed them to get back in the game late in the first half. We did the same thing tonight. However, we found a way to make the plays late in the game to get the win. I'm very pleased with this victory and hope we can build on it."
In the first game of the day, Toia Johnson scored 23 points to lead Norfolk State to a 79-78 win over Jacksonville (0-2). The Spartans (2-0) placed two players on the all-classic team in Ashley Bowman and Johnson. Johnson was named MVP of the classic.
UNC Asheville placed three players on the all-classic team. They were Ashton Barton, Stacy Shepard and Kristal Hood. Campbell's Letitia Dickson rounded out the team.
The Bulldogs will try for their first 3-0 start since the 1987-88 season when they play Gardner-Webb Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.
