ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville won its sixth straight match with a 3-0 win over Elon in the second round of the UNC Asheville Volleyball Classic Saturday morning. The Bulldogs won the match, 30-28, 30-23, 30-27.
Asheville (8-2) was led by sophomore outside hitter Elif Unlu who posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Talia Ogle also had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Setter Amanda Wiles just missed a triple-double with 37 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Allison Lambert added nine kills for the Bulldogs (8-2).
The Phoenix (1-8) was led by Emily Lucci with 13 kills, while Emily Downing posted 10 kills. Jessica Barrow chipped in eight kills. Downing led the Elon defensive effort with nine digs.
In the first game the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead 15-7 but Elon battled back to pull to within two points. UNCA never trailed in the game but the Phoenix tied the match 28-28 behind the play of Lucci and Downing. However, Unlu picked up two kills to end the game and give the Bulldogs a 30-28 win.
In the second game, Asheville sprinted out to 10-3 lead and never led Elon get closer than four points. UNCA hit .436 in the game and won the game, 30-23.
The third game once again had the Bulldogs jump out to an early lead only to see the Phoenix fight back and lead 25-24 on a Lucci kill. The match was tied at 27-27 before Asheville scored the final three points of the match. Unlu and Ogle posted kills to give the Bulldogs a 29-27 before a block by Allison Wrightenberry and Lambert ended the match.
The Bulldogs will play in the final match of the day against mountain rival Western Carolina tonight at 7 p.m. Elon plays at 4:30 p.m. against Samford University.
