CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville senior defender Emily Langill was named as the Preseason Big South Conference Player of the Year for the 2005 season. The poll was conducted by the league's coaches and Sports Information Directors and was announced today by the Big South Conference.
In addition, UNC Asheville was a preseason pick to finish in second place behind tournament champion Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers received 12 first-place votes and 155 out of a possible 162 points, followed by the Bulldogs. UNCA collected three first-place votes and 130 points. Radford received one first-place vote and finished third in the voting with 116 points, while High Point totaled 101 points for the fourth spot. Liberty (one first-place vote and 93 points) was fifth, followed by Coastal Carolina (80 points), Winthrop (57), Charleston Southern (one first-place vote and 56 points) and VMI (22).
Langill was the 2004 Big South Conference Player of the Year as she led the Bulldogs to the regular-season title. She became the first defender in league history to be named Big South Player of the Year. The Littleton, Colo. native scored six goals with four of those goals being game-winners. UNCA finished with a 6-0-2 league record last season and won its first ever regular-season title.
"I'm really pleased for Emily to be named Preseason Player of the Year," commented Bulldog head coach Michele Cornish. "This is great recognition for our program.
"I'm fine with being picked second," added Cornish. "Birmingham-Southern has a good team coming back and they'll be tough to beat. We all know games are played on the field and not on paper.
"The league should be really balanced this year," Cornish also said. "We'll need to play well in every game to have a chance to win." The Bulldogs play their second and final exhibition game on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Tusculum starting at 4 p.m. UNCA opens the season at home against East Tennessee State on Friday, Aug. 26th starting at 4 p.m.
