ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Stacey Anthony scored with two seconds left to give Birmingham-Southern a 58-56 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Justice Center.
The win by the Panthers (12-14, 7-7 BSC) was their fourth victory in the last five games. BSC now has a chance to host a first-round tournament game in the Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament depending what happens in other league games. The Bulldogs (16-11, 8-6 BSC) are assured of the third seed and will be at home Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Martina Knotkova's 17 points and eight rebounds. Anthony added 10 points. Crystal Reed finished with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
UNC Asheville was led by sophomore forward Amanda Elder's career-high 18 points. Lindsey Roche added a season-high 12 points and was 4-of-8 from the three-point line. The four treys made by the senior guard are the most by a UNCA player this year in a game. Andrea Clapp collected nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.
"I am obviously disappointed," stated Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "We were on our heels the whole game. You have to give Birmingham-Southern credit. They came out with more urgency. They were a lot more aggressive and physical than we were. We didn't shoot very well from the free throw line and got out-rebounded."
It was a close game throughout as there were eight lead changes and the score was tied seven times. Asheville led 31-25 at halftime before BSC rallied to take a 54-49 lead on a free throw from Knotkova with 3:56 left.
The Bulldogs came back and tied the game behind five points from Kristal Hood. She scored on a lay-up to cut the lead to 54-51 and then on a three-point play to knot the game at 54-54.
Britini Ballard hit two free throws to push the Panthers in front 56-54 before Katie Baldwin answered back with two free throws to tie the game at 56-56 with 2:36 left.
Each team has chances to take the lead but couldn't do it. The Bulldogs had the ball with 35 seconds left but BSC forced a steal and elected to play for one shot.
Anthony put up a shot with seconds left that missed. Knotkova got the rebound and passed it to Anthony, who hit a 10-footer in the lane to give BSC its winning points.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 38-33 for the game and 25-16 in the second half. Elder enjoyed a solid game for the Bulldogs with seven rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots.
