Kirk Ermels was hired by UNC Asheville women's swimming coach Elizabeth Lykins as the Bulldogs assistant coach.

"I am extremely excited to have Kirk join the swimming staff," stated Lykins. "He will be a valuable asset to the team on pool deck and in our recruiting efforts. Coach Ermels' success at the club and high school level speaks to his immense knowledge of our sport."

Ermels will come to Asheville after spending the past five years in Helena, Mont. He was the head coach of three different boys and girls teams in Helena. Ermels coached the Helena Lions Swim Team, Helena High and Capital squads during his tenure.

He guided the Helena boys to the 2011 state championship and the Helena girls to a tie for the 2012 state title. Ermels directed 18 separate individual prep and HLST champions, as well.

I am very excited to come to Asheville and work with Coach Lykins," stated Ermels. "Having the chance to learn from someone with her track record of coaching successful swimmers and teams is a great opportunity.

"The chance to be a part of building a new program at UNC Asheville is really exciting for me," added Ermels. "I can't wait to get to work and see what we can do with this team."

Ermels was also the head coach of Ingraham HS swim team in Seattle for one year. He served as an assistant coach for the swim program at Norfolk HS in Norfolk, Neb.

Ermels is a 2003 graduate of Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb.
