Berfrantz Charles has been announced as the new assistant coach for UNC Asheville Track and Field on Sept. 7, 2026. 

Charles will serve as an assistant coach working primarily with Asheville’s sprints and hurdles groups.

Charles comes to Asheville with extensive collegiate coaching experience in sprints, hurdles and jumps, most recently serving as the head track & field coach at Florida Institute of Technology. At Florida Tech, Charles oversaw the men’s track & field and cross country programs while handling recruiting, athlete development, scheduling, budgeting, travel and overall team operations. He also developed event-specific training programs for athletes competing in sprints, hurdles, jumps, relays and middle-distance events.

Prior to his time at Florida Tech, Charles spent seven years as an assistant track & field coach at Virginia Union University from 2017-24. During his time with the Panthers, Charles designed and implemented training programs for the program’s jumps, hurdles and sprint athletes. He also played a significant role in recruiting throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina, while assisting with team operations and competition travel.

Charles also brings an accomplished competitive background to Asheville. A multi-event athlete, he was a three-time CIAA champion in the long jump and a five-time CIAA Field MVP from 2012-14. Charles earned First Team All-America honors as a member of the 4x100-meter relay in 2014 and was an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in the 60-meter dash, long jump and 4x100-meter relay.

A graduate of Virginia Union, Charles earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2016 before completing his Master of Science in Biology in 2023. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Project Management from Florida Tech, with an expected graduation date of 2027.
