Henry Patten '19 Plays into Men's Doubles Semifinals, Records Massive Mixed Doubles Upset at the US Open

FLUSHING, N.Y. - UNC Asheville Men's Tennis alum Henry Patten '19 recently played into the men's doubles semifinals at the US Open, while also recording a massive upset in mixed doubles play.

Patten teamed up with Czech Republic native Katerina Siniakova in mixed doubles, who is currently a part of the No. 1 women's doubles team in the world. The duo first displayed Valentin Vacherot (Monaco)/Tatjana Maria (Germany) 4-1, 4-2 in the opening round of qualifying, before beating Americans Peyton Stearns and Christian Harrison 4-1, 4-2 in the second round. The massive upset came in the round of 16, when the pair faced off against the top-seeded team featuring former World No. 1 and then World No. 5 Novak Djokovic (Serbia) alongside Aryna Siarhiejeuna (Belarus). After dropping the opening set 4-1, Patten and Siniakova rallied for a 4-2 win in the second set and took the match with a 10-2 tiebreaker win. The pair then fell in the quarterfinal to Gael Monfils (France)/Elina Svitolina (Sweden).

In men's doubles, Patten and partner Harri Heliovaara came into play as the top-ranked doubles team in the world and the top seed in the bracket. The pair dispatched Juan Manuel Cerundolo/Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, before then beating Matteo Arnaldi (Italy)/Jan-Lennard Struff (Germany) 7-5, 6-2 in the second round. The pair then beat 16-seed James Tracy (USA)/Francisco Cabral (Portugal) 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16, before beating No. 7 seed Manuel Guinard (France)/Guido Andreozzi (Argentina) 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the quarterfinal. Their run came to an end in the semifinal against five-seed Neal Skupski (Great Britain)/Christian Harrison (USA) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

A 2019 graduate of UNC Asheville, Patten was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ITA) All-American in doubles and a three-time Big South Conference Player of the Year. He was a four-time Big South Conference First Team All-Conference selection in singles play, and a three-time First Team All-Conference selection in doubles play. He was a seven-time Player of the Week selection, and a two-time Freshman of the Week selection. Patten also made an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division I national tournament for both singles and doubles. Patten was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2019. He and Olli Nolan also won an Oracle ITA Fall National Championship in 2018.
