Asheville Men's Tennis Sweeps Big South Conference Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Tennis swept the Big South Conference weekly awards for the first time this season, announced by the league today (Wednesday, Mar. 18). Junior Jip Mens has been named Player of the Week, while Daniel Franco-Key has earned Freshman of the Week honors.

Asheville went 3-0 over Spring Break in Florida last week with a 4-2 win over St. Thomas (Fla.), a 4-1 win over Fairfield and a 4-2 win over Marquette.

Mens went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with Cian Ingles, while also going 2-1 at No. 1 singles last week. He posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles in the win over Fairfield, along with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Marquette at No. 1. He and Ingles posted a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles against Fairfield, while also winning at No. 2 doubles against Marquette 6-3.

This is Mens's first career Big South Conference Player of the Week honor. The Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands native is a business administration major.

Franco-Key posted a doubles win with Leo Kolbe in the win over Fairfield, winning 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 doubles. Franco-Key also went 3-0 in singles play at No. 3 singles, with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 win against St. Thomas, a 6-4, 6-2 win against Fairfield and a 6-3, 6-3 win against Marquette.

This is Franco-Key's second career Freshman of the Week honor. The Wrentham, England native is a business major.

The Bulldogs (8-4) return to action tomorrow (Thursday, Mar. 19) hosting North Carolina A&T. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. from Enka High School.  Â
