ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Forty years of competition, unforgettable finishes and a rivalry rooted in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
As UNC Asheville Athletics celebrates 40 years of NCAA Division I competition during the 2026-27 academic year, one of the Bulldogs' most storied regional basketball rivalries takes center stage when Western Carolina visits Kimmel Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The matchup represents more than another non-conference contest. It is a continuation of a series that has featured dramatic finishes, overtime battles and memorable performances across generations of Bulldog basketball.
A Rivalry Rooted in the Mountains
The 1986-87 season marked the beginning of UNC Asheville's NCAA Division I era, and the Bulldogs wasted little time making their presence felt against their mountain neighbors.
Asheville swept both meetings with Western Carolina that season, earning an 85-67 victory followed by a 74-60 win. The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the following season, opening 1987-88 with a 76-71 victory before the Catamounts responded with a narrow 74-69 decision.
The early years of the rivalry featured frequent meetings between the two programs, including several seasons in which Asheville and Western Carolina faced one another twice.
During the 1988-89 campaign, Asheville secured a thrilling 94-91 double overtime victory, one of the highest-scoring contests in the Division I-era series. The Bulldogs followed with another season sweep in 1989-90, defeating Western Carolina 78-70 and 96-83.
While the Catamounts controlled much of the 90s, the foundation had been established for a competitive regional matchup that would continue into the next century.
A New Century of Bulldog Basketball
The Bulldogs made a statement during the 2000-01 season with a commanding 79-59 victory, beginning a stretch of four consecutive wins over the Catamounts.
Asheville followed with victories of 72-66 in 2001-02 and 77-72 in 2002-03, continuing to establish itself against its regional opponent.
The Bulldogs added another convincing victory in 2004-05, defeating Western Carolina 85-71.
As the rivalry continued through the late 2000s, Asheville delivered back-to-back victories in 2007-08 and 2008-09, winning 83-73 and 81-78, respectively.
Thrillers, Overtime and Unforgettable Finishes
Over the last two decades, the mountain rivalry has produced some of its most dramatic moments.
During the 2010-11 season, Asheville battled Western Carolina into overtime before emerging with an 85-79 victory. The Bulldogs followed two seasons later with a 71-61 win during the 2012-13 campaign.
One of the most memorable victories came on Dec. 17, 2016, when Asheville edged Western Carolina 59-57 in the 50th meeting of the rivalry.
The next several years brought heartbreakingly close finishes for the Bulldogs, including a 78-77 defeat in 2019-20 and an 83-81 setback in 2020-21.
Those narrow margins highlighted the competitive nature of a rivalry in which a single possession has frequently made the difference.
Recent Years Bring Renewed Competition
The Bulldogs returned to the win column on Dec. 11, 2021, with a dramatic 73-72 victory in Cullowhee. The win marked Asheville's first victory on Western Carolina's home floor since 2007.
Asheville carried that momentum into the following season, using a strong second-half performance to earn a 73-61 victory over the Catamounts on Nov. 26, 2022.
Western Carolina answered with a 78-63 win in December 2023, but the Bulldogs delivered another memorable performance when the rivalry returned to Asheville in 2024.
On Dec. 14, 2024, Asheville secured a convincing 78-61 victory, continuing the tradition of statement wins on its home floor.
The Catamounts claimed the most recent meeting, defeating the Bulldogs 80-73 in Cullowhee on Nov. 20, 2025, setting the stage for another chapter of the rivalry this November.
Forty Years Later, the Rivalry Continues
From the Bulldogs' inaugural Division I season in 1986-87 to the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, the rivalry between UNC Asheville and Western Carolina has remained an important part of the program's basketball history.
Across four decades, the two programs have exchanged victories, battled through overtime and delivered games decided by the narrowest of margins.
Now, as UNC Asheville celebrates 40 years of Division I athletics, the Bulldogs have another opportunity to add to that history in front of their home crowd.
The next chapter will be written Saturday, Nov. 7, when Asheville welcomes Western Carolina to Kimmel Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
Forty years of history. Two mountain rivals. One more opportunity to make a memory.
