ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer dropped its Ingles I-26 Rivalry tilt to visiting USC Upstate 2-1 on Saturday (Oct. 24) at Greenwood Field.

After the teams spent the first 10 minutes feeling each other out, Upstate would strike first in the 13th minute on a play that started with Josh Zawlocki and Oscar Kelly connecting on a pass before the ball was played into the box from the near wing. Henry Burt got a head on it and was able to stash home his third of the season for a 1-0 Spartans lead that they would eventually take to the half. One of Asheville's best chances of the half came in the 20th minute from the penalty spot, but Upstate's keeper Jared Wurslein came up with a big save to preserve the Spartan lead. Despite trailing, Asheville outshot Upstate 8-4 in the first half with each team earning three corner kicks.

Burt would tally a brace in the 54th minute to give Upstate a 2-0 lead off assists Kelly and Jacob Cromedy, before the Bulldogs had to find a way to respond. Asheville found a way to respond seven minutes later in the 61st when an Upstate misplay in their own box led to a tap-in goal from Kayoum M'Bamba for his eighth of the season. Less than a minute later, Asheville had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot yet again, but Wurslein stood tall a second time to preserve the lead for Upstate yet again. Asheville would try to mount a rally in the final 30 minutes, but would run out of time.

Asheville outshot Upstate 15-11 in the match, including 6-3 in shots on frame while edging Upstate 7-6 in corner kicks. Tyler Ware and M'Bamba each had four shots in the match, while Lennart Granzow and Woody Angell each had two with Granzow matching his career-high. Charlie Wood, Louie Salkeld and Alexander Guindy each had one shot in the match with Guindy matching his career-high, while Lucca Barros (8-5-1) made one save between the pipes.

The Bulldogs (9-5-1, 3-3-0) return to action next Saturday (Oct. 31) at High Point in the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from High Point, N.C. with video, live stats and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
