Bulldogs Blank Wofford for Tuesday Night Non-Conference Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer blanked Wofford 2-0 Tuesday night (Sept. 10) on the road for a key non-conference win. It was the first win for the Bulldogs in Spartanburg since a 1-0 win back on Aug. 27, 2018. With the win, the Bulldogs are off to the program's best start since 1995.

Asheville applied plenty of offensive pressure in the first half, out-shooting Wofford 6-2 and generating three corner kicks while holding Wofford without one. The Bulldogs would strike first in the 39th minute when reigning Big South Conference Co-Freshman of the Week Arnor Hardarson scored his third goal of the season and third goal in the last two matches off an assist from Rodrigo Mendes. The Bulldogs held up defensively after the goal and took their 1-0 lead to the break.

Wofford picked up the offensive intensity in the second half, with each team totaling six shots in the period. The Bulldogs would add an insurance marker in the 89th minute, when Jack Steel scored his first of the season and third of his career off of Miller Hayden's first career assist. Wofford also totaled four corner kicks in the period to Asheville's two, but the Bulldogs held strong defensively to earn the shutout.

Asheville out-shot Wofford 12-8 in the match including 7-4 in shots on goal, with Asheville edging Wofford in corner kicks 5-4. Rinta Takagi led the Bulldogs with three shots in the match, while Mendes had two shots and Brede Fiksdal, Charlie Wood, Lennart Granzow, Dylan Kwasnik, Hayden and Steel each had one shot in the match. Granzow registered the first shot of his Bulldog career in the match. Lucca Barros (4-1-0) came up with a career-high four saves in his first career shutout between the pipes.
