Henry Patten '19 Plays to Gentlemen's Doubles Quarterfinals at Wimbledon

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Tennis alum and defending Wimbledon champion Henry Patten '19 advanced to the Gentlemen's Doubles Quarterfinals at Wimbledon over the last few weeks.

Patten came into the Championships with partner Harri Heliövaara as the No. 3-ranked doubles team in the world and the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The duo began tournament play with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Dan Evans and Henry Searle of Great Britain, before advancing to the third round with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Billy Harris and Marcus Willis of Great Britain. After advancing to the quarterfinals via walkover, the defending champions fell to No. 5 seed Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash of Great Britain in a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8).

Patten also teamed up with fellow Brit Olivia Nicholls to compete in mixed doubles. Patten and Nicholls fell in the first round of mixed doubles to Asia Mohammed (USA) and Andres Molteni (Argentina) 6-3, 6-4.

"We are extremely proud of how Henry represents UNC Asheville on the global stage," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "His remarkable journey as a professional athlete inspires us all."

A 2019 graduate of UNC Asheville, Patten was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ITA) All-American in doubles and a three-time Big South Conference Player of the Year. He was a four-time Big South Conference First Team All-Conference selection in singles play, and a three-time First Team All-Conference selection in doubles play. He was a seven-time Player of the Week selection, and a two-time Freshman of the Week selection. Patten also made an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division I national tournament for both singles and doubles. Patten was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2019. He and Olli Nolan also won an Oracle ITA Fall National Championship in 2018.
