Three Bulldogs Earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Three UNC Asheville Baseball players have earned Academic All-District® honors from College Sports Communicators, announced by the organization yesterday (Tuesday, June 3). This marks the third straight year that Asheville Baseball has had at least one player earn the honor.
 
Nic Melton, Owen Michelson and Daylinh Nguyen-Brown each earned the award for the first time in their career for Asheville.
 
To qualify, a student-athlete must:
  • Be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50
  • Must either appear in 90 percent of athletic contests or start in 66 percent of athletic contests for the year. Pitchers must appear in a minimum of 17 games OR pitch a minimum of 25 innings on the year.
Melton made 21 appearances and two starts as a junior, totaling 22.1 innings with 31 strikeouts. He matched his career-high with three innings at Queens (N.C.) on Mar. 11 while striking out a career-high six in that same game. Academically, Melton holds a 3.54 grade point average in political science.

He is a native of New London, N.C.

Michelson played in 40 games making 34 starts as a sophomore transitioning to the outfield from behind the plate. He totaled 28 hits for a .277 average with six doubles and one triple, also driving in 14 runs while scoring 11 times. Michelson drew 12 walks and stole two bases while posting five outfield assists this season. Michelson posted a career-high three hits on Mar. 29 against Presbyterian stealing two bases in that same game. He also scored two runs and drove in two on Apr. 29 at ETSU while also posting five putouts in that game. In the classroom, Michelson was also Asheville's 2025 Big South Conference All-Academic Team selection. Academically, he holds a 3.68 grade point average in chemistry.

Nguyen-Brown made 20 appearances and four starts in his first season in Asheville. He picked up one win and tied for the Big South Conference lead in saves with six, tying for seventh all-time on Asheville's single-season list. Nguyen-Brown totaled 39 innings with 36 strikeouts, striking out a career-high five against Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 14. He also fired a career-high five innings on May 17 against USC Upstate. Academically, he holds a 3.63 grade point average in biology.
