ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the final game of the regular season, the UNC Asheville men's basketball team traveled to face Winthrop on Saturday (March 1), and fell to the Eagles 103-90.
Jordan Marsh opened the game with a three-pointer and Toyaz Solomon followed quickly after with an alley-oop, but that would be the last lead the Bulldogs would hold in the game, as Winthrop responded with an 18-5 run. The Eagles extended their lead to 16 points, but with 3:42 to go, Asheville went on an 11-0 run to bring Winthrop's lead down to five (44-39). At the end of the half, Winthrop led 51-44.
The Eagles quickly extended their lead out to double-figures to open the second half, but with 12:38 remaining, a jumper in the paint by Marsh sparked a 9-0 run from Asheville. Solomon followed Marsh's jumper with a layup, and Kameron Taylor sank a triple shortly afterward. A dunk in the paint from Solomon capped Asheville's run to make the score 70-67. A layup from Solomon with 10:13 to go made it a one-point game, as the Bulldogs trailed 72-71. This was as close as Asheville would get as Winthrop followed with a triple and extended its lead out to four points or more for the remainder of the game.
Marsh led Asheville with 27 points, going 3-9 from 3-point range and 11-21 from the field. Marsh led the team with seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Solomon followed with 20 points, going 9-11 from the field, and Josh Banks and Taylor rounded out the Bulldogs in double-figures with 17 points each. Banks was 6-11 from the field with four triples. Taylor was 7-10 with two triples. Greg Gantt Jr. was second on the team with six assists. Both Gantt and Banks had four rebounds.
Asheville outshot Winthrop from the field 57.1 to 54.8, but the Eagles capitalized off 30 free throw attempts, as Winthrop made 23 free throw shots, while Asheville was 6-11 from the charity stripe.
