Henry Patten '19 Captures Doubles Title at the Nitto ATP Finals

TURIN, Italy - UNC Asheville Men's Tennis alum Henry Patten '19 has captured another doubles championship in his professional career, bringing his title count to eight with a win at the Nitto ATP Finals over the weekend.
 
Along with doubles partner Harri Heliövaara, the pair ranks No. 3 in the world in men's doubles and was the No. 2 seed coming into the tournament. The duo opened tournament play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Christian Harrison and Evan King (USA), before dropping their second group stage match to No. 5 seed Joe Salisbury/Neal Skupsi of Great Britain 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 10-7. The two concluded group stage play with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over No. 4 seed Marcelo Arevalo (El Salvador)/Mate Pavic (Croatia) to advance to the semifinals. The duo then defeated No. 7 seed Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori (Italy) 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the finals. The pair earned a rematch with Salisbury and Skupski in the finals, earning a 7-5, 6-3 win to clinch the title.
 
On top of the tournament title, Patten's time in Italy was complete when he proposed to his girlfriend Ellie Stone, who played soccer at UNC Asheville from 2015-18.
 
"We're extremely excited to see Henry continue to win on the world stage," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "We're equally as excited to see he and Ellie get engaged, they're both Bulldogs through and through and excellent representatives of what we have here at UNC Asheville."

A 2019 graduate of UNC Asheville, Patten was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ITA) All-American in doubles and a three-time Big South Conference Player of the Year. He was a four-time Big South Conference First Team All-Conference selection in singles play, and a three-time First Team All-Conference selection in doubles play. He was a seven-time Player of the Week selection, and a two-time Freshman of the Week selection. Patten also made an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division I national tournament for both singles and doubles. Patten was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2019. He and Olli Nolan also won an Oracle ITA Fall National Championship in 2018.
