Women finish third; men finish fifth at Upstate Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville cross country had a successful turnout at the Upstate Invite on Saturday (Oct. 18), securing a third-place finish on the women's side (79 points) and a fifth-place finish on the men's side (137 points). Both teams led the Big South field from start to finish. 

On the women's side, the Bulldog charge was led by Isabel Richardson, locking a top-ten finish (eighth) in 18:04. A pack of six Bulldogs came through the first mile with Richardson, with Alison Graf clocking the next fastest finish for Asheville in 18:07 (11th). Next to cross the line was Marika Dickel in 20th (18:25), closely followed by Sophie Lundin in 22nd (18:28, SB). Closing out Asheville's scoring top-five was Addi Corl in 28th (18:35), followed by Ella Moore (43rd, 18:51) and Grace Thompson (56th, 18:59, PR) to put all top-seven women under 19 minutes. 

Since the Louisville Classic (Oct. 4), the top-five Bulldogs have closed their No. 1- No. 5 time spread from 51 seconds to 30 seconds, averaging 18:20 at Saturday's Invite. 

Also representing Asheville were Payton Murphy (66th, 19:13), Ella Warren (130th, 20:36), Hanna Guyton (156th, 21:35), and Maddie Hamuka (173rd, 22:38). 

On the men's side, Jan Málek led the pack, crossing the line in a season's best of 24:59 to take 19th place. Tadiyos Sloan-Westmoreland was next for Asheville in 30th with a personal best of 25:18. Hot on his heels was Quinn Jacquez in 31st (25:24), followed by Jonas Roach (53rd, 26:01, SB) and Yates Hockaday (63rd, 26:12, SB) to round out Asheville's top-five. Asher Roach (74th, 26:27) and Lance Surles (75th, 26:28) helped secure the team's fifth-place finish as Asheville's No. 6 and No. 7. 

Preston Core ran a personal best of 27:33 to place 128th, followed by Bennett Moreno in 179th (29:09). 

The Bulldogs will next compete at the Big South Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31 in Farmville, Virginia.
