Simmons's Double-Double Not Enough in Loss to Presbyterian

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior LaImani Simmons's first career double-double was not enough for UNC Asheville Women's Basketball in a 60-56 loss to Presbyterian on Saturday (Jan. 11).
 
Presbyterian began the game on a 10-0 run in the first quarter, while Asheville eventually found their offensive groove and closed the quarter on a 12-8 run to get back in the game as Presbyterian led 20-12 headed to the second.
 
Asheville outscored Presbyterian 14-10 in the second quarter to close the deficit to 30-26 at the half. The Bulldogs opened the quarter on an 8-0 run punctuated by a LaImani Simmons three-pointer to tie the game at 20 and force a Presbyterian timeout. The teams traded buckets throughout the remainder of the quarter as Presbyterian took their lead to the break.
 
Presbyterian won a low-scoring third quarter 11-9 to take a 41-35 lead to the fourth.
 
Asheville scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to Presbyterian's 19, sparked by a three-pointer from Taylor Wilkins with about four minutes to play to cut the deficit to two. On the following possession with under four minutes to play, Skylar Bailey knocked down a three-pointer to get Asheville back within two yet again. Presbyterian was able to break Asheville's press and score a few late buckets to seal the game and bring the contest to its final score.
 
Asheville shot 32.1 percent (18-56) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Presbyterian 6-4 on second chances and 36-13 off the bench, while also scoring 17 points off turnovers, 20 points in the paint and four points on fast breaks. Simmons finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Abigail Wilson and Skylar Bailey each had 10 points. Wilkins had eight points, while Swift had six points and Dakota McCaughan and Jazlyn Ware each had four points. Behind 10 rebounds from Simmons, Wilson had five rebounds and Deborah Orianegbena posted four rebounds. Wilson moves her career total to 575, putting her 14th on UNC Asheville's all-time career rebounding list. McCaughan, Wilkins and Ware each grabbed three rebounds, while Swift had two boards in the game. McCaughan, Swift and Wilson each had three assists, while Bailey had two and Simmons also had one helper in the game. McCaughan and Simmons each had two steals in the game, while Wilson, Swift, Bailey and Ware each had one. Wilson and Wilkins each had blocks in the game for Asheville.
