Jon Brann Reid Named Big South Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Tennis graduate Jon Brann Reid has been named the 2023-24 Big South Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced by the league today (Wednesday, July 17).
 
Reid went 16-5 in singles play including 14 wins at No. 3 and 3-1 in conference, while teaming up with Rafa Serra at No. 1 doubles to go 11-5 en route to First Team All-Conference Doubles honors.
 
Academically, he was named the Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team, along with being a 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection.
 
Reid is the first men's tennis student-athlete in Asheville history to earn the award, while being the first Bulldog since Blanton Gillespie (cross country/track and field) in 2018-19 and the fourth in UNC Asheville history. Reid graduated from UNC Asheville with a degree in biology and health and wellness promotion with a 4.00 grade point average. He is a native of Hickory, N.C.
 
For his career, Reid was a six-time All-Conference selection along with being the 2021 Freshman of the Year. He was also a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete and also a 2023 Big South Conference All-Academic Team selection.
 
"Brann has been an exemplary student-athlete and this award is testament to that," said head coach Matt Frost. "During his career as a Bulldog he has dedicated his time to achieve great things on the court, in the classroom and within the community. We will miss him greatly, but I know he is going to represent our program as an alumnus exceptionally well."
 
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are voted on by the sports information directors in the Big South Conference.
