Mallory Haney and Jan Málek Reach the Podium; Bulldogs Prepare for Final Day of Competition

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team returned to Vert Stadium at High Point University on Tuesday for the second day of the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships. Gold and bronze for Mallory Haney and silver for Jan Málek highlighted the day of competition. Five Bulldogs qualified for the finals, and 51 points were added to Asheville's total, with the women sitting in third (46 points) and the men in fifth (25 points) ahead of this afternoon's final events. 

TUESDAY FINALS

Highlighting Asheville's second day of competition was Mallory Haney, who locked down the women's triple jump final to take first place (10 points) with her jump of 12.15 meters. Haney also secured a podium finish overall in the women's heptathlon, finishing third (six points) with 4,836 points. She broke her school record of 4,548 points that she set in 2023. She took second in the long jump (5.41m), 9th in the javelin (23.65m), and secured a first-place finish to round out the heptathlon in the 800m (2:24.28). 

Chaniya Owens joined Haney in the women's triple jump final. Owens finished sixth with a distance of 11.40m, adding three points to Asheville's total. Lee Kania followed Haney in the heptathlon, taking seventh place (two points) with 3,763 points overall. 

Jan Málek earned the Bulldogs' first men's podium finish, finishing second in the men's steeplechase. Málek ran a time of 9:13.81, earning eight points for the team. Jonas Roach, who ran a personal best of 9:41.49 to take sixth place in the event, scored three points for the Bulldogs. 

Asheville also secured five points from Raina Jackson (4th, 14.05m, SB) in the women's shot put final and four points from Daphne Bogert in the women's pole vault final (5th, 2.70m). Jaelyn Arnold finished 12th in the women's shot put final with her mark of 11.14 meters. 

Gabe Matthews clocked a personal best of 13.85 meters in the men's triple jump final to take fourth (five points).

Emma Kennett earned a sixth-place finish (three points) in the women's steeplechase final. She ran a time of 11:35.53, with Alyx Beausoleil crossing the line at 12:33.82 to take 12th place. 

After the final five events of the men's decathlon, Adam Graham finished in seventh with 4,730 points, adding two points to Asheville's total. Eli Oeschger finished ninth with 3,948 points. 

TUESDAY QUALIFIERS

Isaac Wright and Braelin June both qualified for finals in the 400m, with Wright finishing in sixth (49.48, PR) and June finishing seventh (49.91, PR). In the 100m, DaMarr Harvey and Jalen Anderson moved on to today's finals round, with Harvey finishing second with a personal best time of 10.41 and Anderson finishing seventh with a season-best time of 10.57. 

Alison Graf finished fifth in the women's 800m prelims, running a time of 2:14.02 to qualify for the final round. 

The third and final day of the Big South Conference Championships will begin this afternoon, Wednesday, May 8, with the women's high jump final at 1:00 p.m. Live results will be available HERE
