KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving now sits in third place after more strong performances vaulted the Bulldogs past Florida Gulf Coast on Friday (Feb. 23). Asheville notched one school and one freshman record, along with five lifetime-best marks and two season-best times during the finals session.
Grace Adams notched an eighth-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 56.23, while Danai Gkogkosi finished in a tie for 15th with a lifetime-best mark of 57.47. Abby Parks notched a seventh-place finish in the 100 breast in 1:02.99 after a lifetime-best 1:02.98 in the morning prelims. Beatrice Cocconcelli also finished 15th in the event in 1:04.38. In the 100 breast time trials, Gracelyn Cox notched a time of 1:05.17 while Miriam Wheatley finished in 1:05.59. Riley Edmundson notched Asheville's third podium finish of the championships in the 200 Fly with a season-best 2:01.17, beating the season-best 2:01.73 she had logged in the morning prelims and becoming the first Asheville swimmer to make the podium at a conference championship in that event. Caroline Crouse finished fifth in 2:01.47, while Chloe McDonald also finished seventh in 2:04.39. Tess Peny logged season-best times in the event in both the prelims (2:07.56) and the finals (2:05.80), where she finished 10th. Julie Lahiff logged a lifetime-best 2:06.51 to finish 12th in the event, after a season-best 2:07.73 in the morning prelims. The 800 Free Relay team of Hefner, Crouse, Ava Kilpatrick and Anna Marcotti finished fourth in 7:29.32. Amelia Ward set a new program and freshman record in the platform diving event, with a lifetime-best score of 199.00. Kindal Culpepper logged a personal-best of 198.10 in the event, while Leigha Travis also scored a 162.55.
Through the morning prelims, Asheville logged five lifetime-bests and six season-bests, while sending five to the A finals and four to the B finals. Amelia Presley swam the 100 back in 59.20, while Addison Wright finished in 1:01.14 and Rachel Daly finished in 1:01.75. Gracelyn Cox swam a season-best 1:05.08 in the event, while Taylor Smith swam the 100 breast in 1:05.33 and Miriam Wheatley swam the event in 1:05.69. Olivia Ciancimino logged a lifetime-best 1:06.23 in the event, while Jane Brierley finished in 1:07.61 and Alexis Walker swam a season-best 1:08.66. Ava Kilpatrick (57.60) and Presley (58.12) each logged lifetime-bests in the time trial of the 100 back, while Anna Kate Halligan posted a lifetime-best in the time trial of the 100 breast in 1:06.96. Rose Sciaudone also logged a season-best 1:55.96 in the time trial of the 200 free.
"It was a great evening of racing," said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "We are very proud to have Riley Edmundson earn bronze in the 200 Butterfly for our first time in program history on the podium in the event."
The Bulldogs return to action for the final day of the championships tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 24). The action begins at 10:00 a.m. from the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, with video available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
