Women's Swimming and Diving in Fourth After Day One of Atlantic Sun Conference Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving sits in fourth place after the first day of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
Through one day Asheville logged 14 finals appearances, one school and freshman record, one NCAA B Cut, six lifetime bests and 12 season-best performances.
Caitlin Hefner logged an eighth-place finish in the finals of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.18 after notching a season-best time of 4:58.12 in the morning prelims, while Riley Edmundson (2:03.78) and Beatrice Cocconcelli (2:05.87) finished sixth and seventh respectively in the finals of the 200 IM. Caroline Crouse finished 13th in 2:06.74, while Anna Kate Halligan finished 15th in 2:07.71 and Tess Peny took 16th with a lifetime-best time of 2:07.78. Abby Parks highlighted the 50 freestyle as Asheville's first medalist at the ASUN Championships, finishing third with a time of 22.78 after logging an NCAA B Cut 22.61 in the morning prelims. Anna Marcotti finished eighth in the event in 23.76 after a lifetime-best 23.45 in the morning prelims, and Olivia Ciancimino took 10th with a season-best 23.68. Ava Kilpatrick also took 16th in the event in 23.91 after a lifetime-best 23.83 in the morning prelims. As the first diver in program history to make a final at the conference championships, Morgan Coughlen took seventh in the 3M with a score of 234.35. The 200 medley relay team of Grace Adams, Ciancimino, Marcotti and Parks also took fourth in 1:43.28.
Julie Lahiff (5:06.61) and Gaby Shenot (5:10.12) each logged season-bests in the prelims of the 500 free, while Rose Sciaudone also swam the event in 5:11.17. Sammy Kershner (2:12.81) and Chloe McDonald (2:10.85) swam season-bests in the 200 IM, while Miriam Wheatley (2:09.01) and Gracelyn Cox (2:11.66) also competed in the event. Taylor Smith (24.07) swam a season-best in the 50 free prelims, while Amelia Presley (24.30) logged a lifetime-best in the event. Jane Brierley (25.70), Rachel Daly (25.50) and Alexis Walker (26.84) also swam in the event. Amelia Ward logged a lifetime best along with a program and freshman record 244.0 on the 3M, while Jade Canady also posted a season-best 239.40 in the event. Leigha Travis (199.80), Kindal Culpepper (184.75) and Haley Fein (179.30) also competed in the event.
"We had a strong first day of conference championships," said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "It was great everyone competed so well this morning to be in the right heats tonight. A good start to the meet."Â
The Bulldogs return to the water tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 22) for the second day of championship action. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m., with video available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
