Women's Basketball Comes Up Just Short Against ETSU

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball came up just short against visiting East Tennessee State on Tuesday (Dec. 17) inside Kimmel Arena by a score of 53-47.

The teams played to 3-3, 5-5 and 8-8 deadlocks in the quarter before Asheville took the lead late with a free throw for a 12-11 lead through 10 minutes.

ETSU took control in the second quarter outscoring Asheville 16-4 in the period for a 27-16 halftime lead.

Asheville started the third quarter on a 9-2 run to get back within four just past four minutes gone, dominating the third quarter outscoring ETSU 17-10 to get back within four headed to the fourth.

 The teams played a back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw ETSU outscore Asheville 16-14 in the game, with Alana Swift getting the Dogs back within two with a bucket just over a minute into the period, before Swift eventually got Asheville back within one with a pair of free throws with five and a half to play. Asheville got within one several times in the fourth quarter, but ETSU was able to put the game away at the free throw line.

Asheville shot 30.9 percent (17-55) from the floor, along with 20.8 percent (5-24) from long range and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored ETSU 4-2 on fast breaks and 18-4 off the bench despite having only three players available on the bench while scoring 10 points off turnovers, 14 points in the paint and seven points on second chances. Abigail Wilson led the Bulldogs with 13 points to eclipse 700 for her college career, while Swift also added 11 points off the bench. Dakota McCaughan added nine points, while LaImani Simmons and Taylor Wilkins each scored seven. McCaughan paced the Bulldogs with six rebounds in the game, while Swift had five and Wilson and Sydney Burris each had four. Simmons grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Skylar Bailey and Wilkins each had one. Wilkins tied a career-high with four assists in the game, while Wilson had two and McCaughan, Simmons and Burris each had one. McCaughan, Bailey and Swift each had two steals in the game, while Simmons also had one.
