ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Friday night marked the first time in 52 days that the UNC Asheville volleyball team played inside the Justice Center on the campus of UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs faced Charleston Southern and won the match in three sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-23), avenging their loss to the Buccaneers earlier this season.
ON THE COURT
A 4-1 run by CSU put the Buccaneers ahead 9-6 early in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs quickly evened the score at 12 with a kill from Lydia Pate, followed by a Buccaneer attack error. Both teams were back-and-forth as there were four ties to follow, with the Bulldogs taking the lead 17-16 following a CSU attack error. Asheville held the lead for the rest of the set and won the opening frame 25-18.
CSU led 4-3 in the second set before a 5-0 Asheville run helped Asheville ahead 8-4. A kill from Kylie Cackovic helped kick-start Asheville's run. The Bulldogs led for the rest of the set to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Bulldogs opened the final frame with a 4-1 lead, fueled by a kill from Kimberly Czepukaitis and a block to give Asheville its fourth point. Charleston Southern took the lead following a 3-0 run and extended its lead out to four (13-9). The Buccaneers were poised to send the match into a fourth set as they led 18-13, but a kill from Cackovic sparked a Bulldog run, and the Bulldogs were able to bring the score back within two (18-16). Trailing by two with the Buccaneers two points away from winning the third frame, Asheville closed the match with a 4-0 run to secure the sweep. A service error by CSU sparked Asheville's run as Cackovic and Payton Rolfsen followed with back-to-back kills. Cackovic secured her 14th kill of the night to end the match.
