Women's Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Gardner-Webb for Atlantic Sun Conference Victory

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving cruised past Gardner-Webb on Saturday (Jan. 6) for an Atlantic Sun Conference victory by a score of 143-60. The Bulldogs have now won six dual meets in a row on the season.

The day began with Asheville taking first, second and fourth in the 400-yard medley relay, paced by the quartet of Alessia Cunegatti, Abby Parks, Taylor Smith and Anna Marcotti in 4:00.72. The team of Ava Kilpatrick, Beatrice Cocconcelli, Danai Gkogkosi and Olivia Ciancimino finished second in 4:01.83, while Amelia Presley, Jane Brierley, Chloe McDonald and Rachel Daly teamed up for a fourth-place finish in 4:09.06. Grace Adams posted a win in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:53.42, while Gaby Shenot finished third in 11:22.63 and Rose Sciaudone finished fourth in 11:23.03. Caroline Crouse posted a win in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.19, while Marcotti finished third in 1:58.76 and Caitlin Hefner took fourth in 2:00.62. Parks (1:57.85), Anna Kate Halligan (2:02.05) and Julie Lahiff (2:05.30) also swam the event for Asheville. Kilpatrick (24.89 seconds) and Ciancimino (25.56 seconds) finished second and third respectively in the 50-yard freestyle, while Gkogkosi finished fifth in 25.94 seconds. Smith (25.30 seconds), Presley (26.54 seconds) and Alexis Walker (27.26 seconds) also swam the event for Asheville.

Asheville took the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, with Cunegatti winning in 2:12.38, Cocconcelli finishing second in 2:12.70 and Riley Edmundson finishing third in 2:17.06. Miriam Wheatley (2:14.41), Gracelyn Cox (2:17.67) and Tess Peny (2:18.22) also raced the event for Asheville. Asheville posted a win along with third-place and fifth-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly, with Edmundson getting the win in 2:10.35. McDonald took third in 2:14.40, while Scaiudone finished fifth in 2:19.62 and Peny also swam the event in 2:20.27. The Bulldogs took second, third and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, paced by Kilpatrick in second in 54.42 seconds. Gkogkosi finished third in 55.01 seconds, while Cunegatti also finished fourth in 55.09 seconds. Daly also swam the event in 56.44 seconds. Adams posted her second win of the day in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.37, while Hefner finished third in 2:13.45 and Presley took fifth in 2:17.04. Asheville finished second through fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, paced by a second-place finish from Halligan in 5:17.94. Marcotti took third in 5:29.08, while Lahiff finished fourth in 5:29.43. Edmundson would collect another win in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.83, while Crouse finished second in 2:26.28 and Cox took third in 2:28.49. Brierley (2:35.25), Shenot (2:37.65) and Sciaudone (2:38.80) also swam the event for Asheville.

Asheville capped off the meet finishing first, third and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Crouse, Cocconcelli, Ciancimino and Parks won the event in 1:38.32, while Hefner, Smith, Wheatley and Adams finished third in 1:41.54. McDonald, Walker, Peny and Daly finished sixth in the event in 1:47.18.

"This week of practices was tough but I was proud of the team for pulling out a win against a strong opponent," said Presley, a freshman.

"All our ladies were super supportive and hyped for our first swim meet of 2024!" said Daly, a senior. "I could not be more proud of how we performed today."

The Bulldogs (7-1, 2-0 ASUN) return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 9) at No. 20 North Carolina. The action begins at 1:00 p.m. from Chapel Hill, N.C., with video available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
