Women's Swimming and Diving Drops Non-Conference Contest at No. 20 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving dropped its non-conference contest at No. 20 North Carolina on Tuesday (Jan. 9) by a score of 211-84.

Asheville began the day taking fifth through eighth in the 200-yard medley relay, led by the team of recently-named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week Grace Adams, Beatrice Cocconcelli, Taylor Smith and Abby Parks in 1:47.82. Amelia Presley, Gracelyn Cox, Chloe McDonald and Danai Gkogkosi finished sixth in 1:51.44, while Alessia Cunegatti, Olivia Ciancimino, Riley Edmundson and Ava Kilpatrick took seventh in 1:51.48. Addison Wright, Miriam Wheatley, Tess Peny and Alexis Walker took eighth in 1:55.72. Asheville also took fifth through eighth in the 1000-yard freestyle, paced by Caitlin Hefner in 10:36.10. Anna Kate Halligan took sixth in 10:48.71, Rose Sciaudone seventh in 11:05.58 and Gaby Shenot finished eighth in 11:11.93. Asheville placed fifth through seventh in the 200-yard freestyle with Anna Marcotti taking fifth in 1:55.83, Wheatley in sixth in 1:57.10 and Gkogkosi in seventh in 2:02.80. Asheville placed fifth through eighth in the 100-yard backstroke with Adams in fifth in 58.61 seconds, Cunegatti in sixth in 1:01.00, Presley in seventh in 1:01.46 and Wright in eighth in 1:04.80. Walker also swam the event in 1:06.97.

Asheville notched fifth through seventh place in the 100-yard breaststroke, led by Cocconcelli in fifth in 1:06.55. Smith took sixth in 1:07.58, while Cox finished seventh in 1:07.97. The Bulldogs captured fifth through eighth in the 200-yard butterfly, led by Edmundson in fifth in 2:07.21 and Julie Lahiff in sixth in 2:13.39. McDonald took seventh in 2:14.05, while Peny also finished eighth in 2:16.23. Asheville took fifth through seventh in the 50-yard freestyle led by Marcotti in fifth in 24.42 seconds. Ciancimino finished sixth in 24.95 seconds, while Kilpatrick finished seventh in 25.03 seconds. Asheville took second, sixth and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, with Parks finishing second in 51.88 seconds. Kilpatrick too sixth in 54.09 seconds, while Ciancimino finished seventh in 55.83 seconds. Asheville took fifth through seventh in the 200-yard backstroke paced by 2:08.43, while Adams finished sixth in 2:09.81 and Presley finished seventh in 2:14.40.

Asheville finished fifth through eighth in the 200-yard breaststorke, with Edmundson finishing fifth in 2:24.40 and Wheatley taking sixth in 2:24.71. Cocconcelli finished seventh in 2:26.12, while Cox finished eighth in 2:26.97. Halligan (2:32.62), Shenot (2:35.58) and Sciaudone (2:37.34) also swam the event for Asheville. Asheville took third through sixth in the 500-yard freestyle led by Hefner in 5:11.41, while Adams finished fourth in 5:18.29. Halligan took fifth in 5:19.83, while Lahiff took sixth in 5:25.38. The Bulldogs finished second through fifth in the 100-yard butterfly paced by a second-place finish from Smith in 57.84 seconds. McDonald finished third in 59.54 seconds, Marcotti took fourth in 1:00.11 and Gkogkosi fifth in 1:02.05. Wright (1:00.54) and Walker (1:03.92) also swam the event for Asheville.

Asheville took fourth through ninth in the one-meter diving event, paced by Morgan Coughlen with a score of 223.70. Jade Canady finished fifth with a score of 202.15, with Amelia Ward 168.60. Leigha Travis took seventh with a score of 162.35, Kindal Culpepper finished eighth with a score of 158.40 and Haley Fein finished ninth with a score of 143.40. Asheville took fourth through eighth in the three-meter diving event, led by Jade Canady in fourth with a score of 196.70 and Coughlen in fifth with a score of 188.85. Travis (178.35). Ward (168.85) and Culpepper (168.60) rounded out the event for Asheville.

"It was a great learning experience to travel and compete at Chapel Hill today," said Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "The team remained positive in their events and continued cheering for one another as everyone works toward perfecting our race and dive strategies for conference championships."

The Bulldogs (7-2, 2-0 ASUN) are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 to face South Carolina and Duke in Columbia, S.C. The action begins at 12:00 p.m.
