Bulldogs Pick Up Senior Day Win over UNC Pembroke

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving picked up a 139-123 win over UNC Pembroke on Senior Day to extend the team's winning streak inside the Justice Center to 13 straight dual meets dating back to Oct. 2020.

Asheville opened the day taking second, third and fourth in the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of Amelia Presley, Beatrice Cocconcelli, Addison Wright and Abby Parks taking second in 1:48.99. Alessia Cunegatti, Taylor Smith, Danai Gkogkosi and Anna Marcotti finished third in 1:50.15, while Rachel Daly, Alexis Walker, Sammy Kershner and Olivia Ciancimino took fourth in 1:53.46. Caitlin Hefner finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:27.64, while Grace Adams finished fourth in 10:45.79. Asheville took second, third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, paced by Marcotti in second in 1:55.47. Caroline Crouse finished third in 1:55.81, while Gkogkosi took fourth in 1:59.96. Miriam Wheatley also swam the event in 1:57.79. Asheville swept the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke, with Cocconcelli winning the event in 58.59 seconds. Ava Kilpatrick took second in 59.05 seconds, while Daly took third in 1:02.90. Anna Kate Halligan (1:04.04), Rose Sciaudone (1:04.21), Gaby Shenot (1:04.84) and Tess Peny (1:04.87) also competed in the event.

Asheville took second, third and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, paced by Riley Edmundson in second in 1:07.18. Cunegatti took third in 1:10.23, while Julie Lahiff took fifth in 1:11.60. Gracelyn Cox (1:08.52), Ciancimino (1:08.74), Jane Brierley (1:09.97) and Walker (1:14.50) also competed in the event. Asheville took third and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, with Chloe McDonald taking third in 2:12.61 and Smith finishing fourth in 2:16.04. Asheville took first, third and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, with Parks getting the win in 23.84 seconds, Crouse taking third in 25.33 seconds and Presley finishing fifth in 25.92 seconds. Parks picked up her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.94 seconds, while Marcotti finished third in 53.76 seconds and Gkogkosi taking fourth in 54.83 seconds. Shenot (55.98 seconds), Daly (56.21 seconds) and Wright (56.27 seconds) also competed in the event. Asheville swept the top three spots in the 200-yard backstroke, with Adams getting the win in 2:07.86. Cunegatti took second in 2:07.92, while Kilpatrick finished third in 2:11.41.

Asheville took third, fourth and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Wheatley taking third in 2:25.64. Cocconcelli took fourth in 2:27.60, while Gracelyn Cox also finished fifth in 2:28.80. Asheville took second, fifth and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle paced by Hefner in second in 5:11.84. Crouse took fifth in 5:25.04, while Presley also finished sixth in 5:35.03. McDonald won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.58 seconds, while Smith finished third in 58.89 seconds and Kershner took fourth in 1:00.30. Wright (1:00.01), Walker (1:01.61) and Brierley (1:03.32) also competed in the event. Edmundson would finish second in the 400-yard IM in 4:28.12, while Halligan finished fifth in 4:46.44. Sciaudone (4:42.90), Lahiff (4:49.00) and Peny (4:50.84) also competed in the event. The quartet of Parks, Crouse, Marcotti and Ciancimino won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:36.11, while Gkogkosi, Kilpatrick, Adams and McDonald finished third in 1:39.88. Wright, Daly, Kershner and Presley finished fourth in 1:42.99.

"The team did so well, UNC Pembroke put up a great fight, but we fought back harder," said Kershner. "I am so thankful for UNC Asheville, and this team. They truly made this last meet special for me. It was my first meet back this season after an injury, and I am so grateful for the love and support from my teammates, friends, parents, and coaches. Go Bulldogs!"

"What a great meet to celebrate our Class of 2024 graduates!" said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "UNC Pembroke showed up, prepared and ready to race. The fans and visiting families were incredible support for a meet that came down to the last relay."

The Bulldogs (8-4, 2-0 ASUN) return to the water for the Atlantic Sun Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 21-24. The event will take place at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
