Bulldogs Notch First Clean Sheet of the Year with 2-0 Win over VMI

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer notched the first clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 win over VMI at Greenwood Field on Saturday (Sept. 16).
Asheville would strike first in the 29th minute when Heath Flathau connected with Conor Behan on a pass through, with Behan then feeding Edvin Grolimund who scored his first career goal to put the Bulldogs on the board. Flathau collected his first career assist on the play. Asheville would keep the pressure up and hold strong defensively before taking a 1-0 lead to the half.
The Bulldogs would add an insurance marker in the 72nd minute, when Sergio Báguena was able to corral the ball in a crowd of three VMI defenders, before turning, creating space and ripping a bender to the top-right corner to double Asheville's lead. Asheville would keep the ball in VMI's end in the final 20 minutes to seal the shutout victory.
Asheville totaled a season-high 21 shots in the contest out-shooting VMI 21-6, led by four from Brendan Herb. Stewart Patnaud and Báguena each had three shots in the match, while Seth Hammond and Behan each had two shots. Aysa Hamid, Keegan Peat, Benian Yao and Jack Steel also each recorded one shot in the match. Asheville also out-worked VMI for corner kicks 11-2. Charlie Farrar (4-2-1) made three saves in his first shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs (4-2-1) return to the pitch on Tuesday (Sept. 19) at East Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Johnson City, Tenn., with live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
