Solomon McDonald Wraps Up NCAA East Appearence
05.24.2023 | Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - UNC Asheville senior field athlete Solomon McDonald wrapped up competition and his collegiate career at the NCAA East Prelims on Wednesday (May 24).
McDonald competed in his final men's shot put event at the regional championships, throwing a whopping 17.56 meters and earning him 36th-place finish. His throw at these championships bested his throw at last season's regional, a 17.46-meter throw that earned him a 33rd-place finish.
"Solomon threw farther in this year's competition than last year's meet. He came in as a walk-on, throwing at 51 feet as a high schooler at 12 pounds to a 60 foot thrower at 16 pounds," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "He's worked tirelessly for years to make himself into an elite collegiate thrower."
"I am truly grateful for all my coaches, my event coach Kim Cannon, head coach Joel Williams, strength coach Brian Robbett and Coach JP Kimbrough," said McDonald. "They have allowed me to grow into the thrower I am today, and I could have done it without their help along the way."
"I couldn't be more proud of Solomon," said UNC Asheville Throwing Coach Kim Cannon. "He started out as a walk-on and now he has represented our university at on of the highest levels for two years in a row, which sets him apart. He proves that hard work truly does pay off."
Asheville has one more competitor left at the regional championships, with senior Claudia Prieto taking on the women's long jump at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, May 25). Live results can be found HERE, with live video on ESPN+ HERE.
