Bulldogs Close Out VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field concluded competition at the VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday (Apr. 1), finishing strong with three podium finishes and a few personal and season bests in their final day at High Point.

Claudia Prieto took center stage once again for the Bulldogs, taking third place in the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.31 meters. After taking second in the long jump, Prieto continued her podium streak, now having placed top-three in at least one event in her last 10 meets. The last time she missed the podium was on March 19th, 2022 when she competed at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. 

The relay team of Anthony Mason, Christopher Owens, Zac Weas and Bryson Riddick took third place in the men's 4x400 relay. Their time of 3:18.01 marked the fifth-fastest time in program history and kept Weas's podium streak alive, who has dominated the hurdles since the Big South Indoor Championships. Riddick also finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a season best time of 48.61.

Solomon McDonald finished sixth in the men's discus while setting a new personal best of 52.27 meters, while on the women's side of, Noela Morega's discus throw was a season best 37.59 meters.

Walker Lezotte also took home some hardware, placing third in the 800-meter participate early in the morning with a season best time of 1:57.94. Brock Newsome finished with a personal best in the 1500-meter (1:52.67) and Maya Dulaney finished both the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.32) and the 100-meter hurdles (15.43) with season-best times.

"We had a lot of seasonal bests, personal bests, and top-five all-time finishes today," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "The weather on Saturday in the morning relative to the afternnoon was a tale of two meets. The morning was full of rain, sometimes heavy, until noon when conditions changed making the afternoon events much more favorable."

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Apr. 14-15 when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina.
