Track and Field Finishes Day One at VertKlasse Meeting
03.31.2023 | Track and Field
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team finished up day one of the VertKlasse Meeting on Friday (Mar. 31) at High Point University. The Bulldogs logged several stellar performances amid tough competition with a first place throw, two top-three finishes and several top-ten performances and personal bests.
The win from today's competition came from Solomon McDonald, who continued cementing himself as one of the greatest Bulldog field athletes in program history. McDonald won the men's shot put with a throw of 17.56-meters, claiming his sixth first-place throw of the track season through eight meets. His throw nearly broke his own outdoor school record, missing the mark by .07 meters.
Claudia Prieto, another all-time great Asheville track and field athlete, took second in the women's long jump. Like McDonald, Prieto barely missed breaking her own record with a jump of 6.00 meters. Prieto has made the podium in each meet she has participated in this season, in either the long jump or triple jump.
Coming off a first-place victory at the Montreat Invitational last week, Brianna Moore took third place in the javelin and improved her personal best distance with a throw of 42.53 meters. Moore improved her personal best at Montreat with a throw of 41.88 meters, and today improved it further, now ranking second all-time in women's javelin at Asheville. Moore also finished top-ten in the long jump with a season best jump of 5.65 meters
Other notable performances include Adam Hessler finishing ninth in the 1500-meter run with a new personal best of 3:52.81, the second-fastest time in program history. Daniel Hopkins (14:41.69), Quinn Jacquez (15:01.16) and Jackson Core (15:22.98) all finished with new personal bests in the 5000-meter run, with Hopkins finishing in the top-ten. Maddie Hamuka took a personal best in the women's 1500-meter with a time of 5:15.13. Raina Jackson finished in the top-ten for women's shot put with a throw of 13.41 meters.Â
The Bulldogs will close out the VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday. The action will get underway at 9 a.m. Like Friday, Saturday will have an ESPN+ broadcast that is scheduled to be on the air at 2:40 p.m. Live results are also available here.Â
