Bulldogs Battle for Road Win at High Point Wednesday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball battled for a Big South Conference road win at High Point on Wednesday (Feb. 1) by a score of 64-51.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-3 lead through the first five minutes, before High Point was able to close the gap to a 13-10 Asheville lead after one quarter.

After High Point got within two early in the second quarter, Nycerra Minnis put the Bulldogs back up by four with a bucket off an assist from Jordaynia Ivie four minutes into the period. High Point rallied to take the lead with just under three minutes to play, before the teams traded buckets to land knotted up at 22 with just a minute and a half to play. After a layup by Jenson Edwards gave the Panthers a brief 24-22 lead, Asheville responded with five unanswered points in the final minute off a three-pointer from Millie Brown and a jumper at the buzzer from Abigail Wilson.

Asheville's lead went back up to eight in the first two minutes of the third quarter, eventually growing to 10 just past the halfway point of the frame. The Bulldogs saw their lead grow even more late in the period, before they took a 46-36 lead to the fourth.

The Bulldogs saw the lead grow to as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs controlled the tempo in the frame from start to finish.

Asheville out-scored High Point 34-28 in the paint, 6-4 on second chances and 10-8 off the bench. The Bulldogs also scored 10 points off turnovers and 12 off fast breaks. Ivie led the scoring effort with a game-high 19 points, just one off her career-high while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter also scored 18 in the win. Wilson added eight points in the game, while Mallory Bruce had seven. Dakota McCaughan and Brown each had three points in the game, while Faith Adams, Nycerra Minnis and Jamaya Blanks each had two points in the game. Asheville also out-rebounded High Point 38-30 in the game, led by nine from Wilson and seven each from Bruce and Adams, with Adams notching a new career-high. Blanks pulled down five boards in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter had four and Ivie and McCaughan each had two. Brown and Minnis each also had one rebound in the game. Ivie dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter had three and McCaughan had two. Wilson, Bruce, Adams and Blanks each tallied one assist in the game as well. Brooks-Sumpter registered a team-high three steals in the game, while Bruce had two steals and Ivie, McCaughan and Wilson each had one. Blanks and Minnis each posted one rejection in the game.
