Bulldogs Battle to 2-2 Draw at Gardner-Webb Friday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw in Big South Conference action at Gardner-Webb Friday night (Oct. 6).
Asheville struck first in the 13th minute, when Sergio Báguena put home his third of the season off assists from Sam Pitts-Eckersall and Myles Edmondson. Gardner-Webb would tie the match in the 31st minute, when Leonardo Andrade scored his second of the season off assists from Breno Correia and Kaelen Debbage. The teams would play out the remaining minutes of the first half trading chances before going to the break tied 1-1.
Gardner-Webb pushed the pace early in the second half, ultimately creating space in the Asheville end. In the 62nd minute, Santiago Hoyos earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the Asheville box. Hoyos scored his second of the season off a penalty kick to put Gardner-Webb ahead 2-1. Asheville would work its way back into the Gardner-Webb end, eventually finding paydirt in the 78th minute. Viðar Ragnarsson played a ball forward in the air, that was tracked the whole way by team captain Brendan Herb. Herb headed home his third of the season to bring the match to its final score, as Charlie Farrar had to come up with some big saves late in the match to hold the draw.
Asheville totaled 11 shots in the match, with three on target along with five corner kicks. Báguena, Edmondson and Aysa Hamid each had two shots in the contest, while Pitts-Eckersall, Herb, Benian Yao, Edvin Grolimund and Evan Lupo each registered one shot in the contest. Farrar (6-3-2) made seven saves in the contest.
The Bulldogs (6-3-2, 1-1-1) return to action next Saturday (Oct. 14) back at home against Radford for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
