McKinley Brooks-Sumpter Named to Preseason All-Conference First Team, Asheville Tabbed Fifth in Big South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll

FULL BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville redshirt senior guard McKinley Brooks-Sumpter was named to the Big South Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team, while the Bulldogs were tabbed fifth in the 2023-24 Big South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced by the league today (Tuesday, Oct. 17).
Brooks-Sumpter put together a solid campaign in 2022-23, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding while ranking eighth in the conference in scoring (13.1 PPG) and being tied for seventh in the conference in rebounding (6.6 RPG). She was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 12, 2022. Brooks-Sumpter was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection a season ago, while also being named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team.
The Bulldogs went 12-19 a season ago, including a 7-11 mark in Big South Conference play. The Bulldogs rallied from a 17-point deficit to win against Winthrop in the first round of last year's Big South Conference tournament, before falling to top-seeded Gardner-Webb in the tournament quarterfinals. Asheville finished the season second in the Big South Conference and 29th in the nation in three-point shooting defense, holding opponents to 27.7 percent from beyond the arc.
