Henry Patten '19 Picks Up a First Round Win at the Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia - UNC Asheville men's tennis alum Henry Patten '19 picked up a first-round doubles win alongside fellow countryman Julian Cash at the 2023 Australian Open on Thursday (Jan. 19).
The British tandem earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pedro Cachin and Guido Pella of Argentina.
"Henry continues to be an inspiration to everyone at UNCA," said Head Men's Tennis Coach Tom Hand. "It is fantastic to not only see the success that he is having, but how excited all of the current and former players are to watch it all."Â
The pair were able to compete at Wimbledon in 2022 after receiving a Wild Card entry to the main event. Since then, Patten and Cash have seen their rankings climb to #64 and #65 in the world respectively, which means they are now direct entrants into the prestigious Grand Slam tournaments.
A 2019 graduate of UNC Asheville, Patten was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ITA) All-American in doubles and a three-time Big South Conference Player of the Year. He was a four-time Big South Conference First Team All-Conference selection in singles play, and a three-time First Team All-Conference selection in doubles play. He was a seven-time Player of the Week selection, and a two-time Freshman of the Week selection. Patten also made an appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division I national tournament for both singles and doubles. Patten was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2019.
Patten and Cash return to the court in the second round of men's doubles play tonight at 10:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
