09.29.2022 | Women's Swimming & Diving

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving teams will open their 2022-23 season this weekend when they host ECU. The Bulldogs and Pirates will begin with the diving portion of the meet on Friday at 4 p.m. from the Jewish Community Center in Asheville. The swimming portion of the meet will occur Saturday morning at the Justice Center Pool at 10 a.m. The latter session can be seen on ESPN+.

Quick Look Back at 2021-22 – Asheville is coming off its most successful season as a program in 2021-22. The Bulldogs went a perfect 8-0 in dual meets and finished a program-best third at the CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships in mid-February. Furthermore, the Bulldogs rewrote the record book by breaking 10 freshmen, one freshmen relay, 14 individual school, four relay records, and three Bulldogs earned NCAA Provisional Marks in 2021-22.

Successful Streak – The Bulldogs have enjoyed a very successful streak in dual meets in recent years. Since November 2019, Asheville has posted a record of 16-1-1 in dual meets. Among these 16 victories are stellar wins over ECU, UNC Wilmington, Campbell, and Liberty.

About the Newest Bulldogs – The Bulldogs will return many familiar faces from last season's team for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign. In the offseason, Asheville brought in eight newcomers. The newest Bulldogs hail from as close as North Carolina and as far away as Italy. To read more about the newest Bulldogs, click HERE.

Note from Coach – "This meet is an excellent way to kick off to our dual meet schedule," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "ECU is going to be a tough opponent and will be ready to compete. Our 2022-23 Bulldog squad is up for the challenge and ready to take on the new season. Looking forward to rocking the Justice Center for the start of the season!"

About the Pirates – ECU is in its second season back after its program was briefly discontinued during the 2020-21 season. The Pirates will bring back 10 swimmers from their comeback season in 2021-22, while bringing in 16 newcomers.

Series Rewind vs. ECU – The Bulldogs and Pirates have met just once previously and that was last October. Asheville ended up knocking off ECU by a score of 174-124 in that contest.
