BOONE, N.C. –
The UNC Asheville cross country teams wrapped up their first races of the 2022 season on Friday when they competed at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C. The men's team placed ninth, while the women's team finished 12th.

The women's 5k race opened the day. Asheville had seven runners take to the course on Friday with four of them being freshmen. Two of those freshmen, Sophie Lundin and Emma Kennett posted the fastest times for Asheville clocking in at 19:33.54 and 19:56.25 in their first respective collegiate races.

In the men's 8k race, meanwhile, 146 runners were in the field on the day. Two of the seven Bulldogs ranked in the top-30 student-athletes on the day. Adam Hessler finished 16th with a time of 25:55.61, while Daniel Hopkins checked in at 27th with a time of 26:18.26. Hessler's time, while not a personal-best, would rank 23rd on Asheville's all-time fastest 8k times list.

The cross country teams will be back in action on September 17 when they compete at the Winthrop Invitational.
