Volleyball splits a pair of matches to open the 2022 season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team split a pair of matches to open its 2022 season on Friday at the Justice Center. On the first day of the UNC Asheville Invitational, the Bulldogs swept Stonehill in three sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) but dropped a three-set contest later in the day to North Alabama (25-18, 25-15, 25-21).
Match vs. Stonehill Recap – Asheville played a balanced match to open the day vs. Stonehill. Collectively, the Bulldogs attacked the Skyhawk defense at a .323 clip on 93 attack attempts. Thanks to its efficiency offensively, the Bulldogs were able to pick up some key points in the late stages in each set to sweep Stonehill, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.
Kat Cruser led the charge offensively for the Bulldogs vs. the Skyhawks posting 10 kills on 23 attempts with just one error for a .391 hitting percentage. Lexy Cole also had a stellar 2022 debut with six kills to go with three aces. Defensively, the Bulldogs were paced by newcomer Giulia Rodrigues with 15 digs. Rodrigues also picked up three assists and three unlikely kills from her libero position.
Match vs. North Alabama Recap – In its second match of the day, UNA used sizable runs in the first and second sets to take those frames 25-18 and 25-15. However, things tightened up considerably in the third. Asheville clamped down defensively and held the Lions to an .061 hitting percentage in the third. The Bulldogs led at one point before UNA took it back for good, winning the match, 25-21. The Bulldogs did rattle off a 4-0 run to make the score 23-21 before North Alabama closed it out.
Individually, Asheville was led in the contest by freshman Kylie Cackovic and Rodrigues. Cackovic picked up the first double-double of her collegiate career finishing with 12 kills and 10 digs. Rodrigues, meanwhile, posted her second double-digit performance of the day matching Cackovic's 10 digs with 10 of her own.
Other Matches on Day One – In other action on day one of the UNC Asheville Invitational, Morehead State swept Queens University of Charlotte and North Alabama did the same to Stonehill.
Next Up – Asheville will be back in action on Saturday for the final day of the UNC Asheville Invitational. The Bulldogs will close the weekend's action by hosting Queens (N.C.) at 5 p.m. on ESPN+. Before that contest, Queens and Stonehill will play at 11 a.m. and Stonehill will also face Morehead State at 3 p.m. A reminder that admission is free to all matches.
