ASHEVILLE, N.C. UNC Asheville men's basketball continued its busy offseason on Friday, as head coach Mike Morrell announced the signing of transfer Alex Caldwell.

"We are very excited to add Alex to our program," Morrell said. "He is a player that really fits our style of play and comes with a ton of Division I experience the last four years."

Spending the first two seasons of his collegiate career playing for Southeast Missouri State, Caldwell burst onto the scene as a freshman, ranking third on the team in scoring with 8.7 points per game in 24 contests as a rookie. Caldwell would rank in the top five for the Redhawks in 3-point percentage (.390), made 3-pointers (30), 3-pointers per game (1.3), assists per game (1.7) and steals (22). As a sophomore, Caldwell would start 29 of 31 games, averaging 11.7 points per game (second on team) in 31.2 minutes per game, shooting 40.5 percent from the floor, 34 percent from downtown and leading the team in assists (95). The 6-foot-0 guard scored in double figures in all but 11 games, registering at least one assist 29 times, dishing out four or more 10 times.

After making the move to N.C. Central, Caldwell was a key player for the Eagles this past season, starting 11 of 24 games played and averaging 5.0 points per game while dishing out 33 assists to go with 15 steals. The Columbia, South Carolina, native opened the season with a 17-point effort, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range against Richmond. Caldwell's 17-point effort against Norfolk State in January helped lift N.C. Central to a big 70-67 victory. For the season, Caldwell dished out an assist in 15 games, totaling three or more five times.

In high school, Caldwell scored over 1,000 points (Wilson High School) and was named the Class 4A Player of the Year as a senior with an average of 22.0 points, 7.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds, leading his team to two state final appearances.
