CHARLOTTE, N.C.
– The Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) announced Friday that UNC Asheville's Delaney Carlton has been named the conference's Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Carlton is the third Bulldog ever to earn this honor, joining Catherine Allen (2017-18) and Skylar Rogan (2018-19).

Carlton is an Applied Physics major carrying a 3.925 cumulative GPA. She has been hand-picked by Dr. Lundgren of the Physics & Astronomy department at UNC Asheville to conduct astronomy research this summer. Their research goals: to use light from very distant quasars (the most luminous objects in the universe, supermassive black holes) to observe the otherwise invisible gas surrounding galaxies. Applying spectroscopy, they have the ability to observe how this gas is flowing into/out of/around said galaxies providing a better look at the process of star formation.

She has been nominated for the Rising Star award amongst all UNC Asheville female student-athletes for her contribution to the local community and her involvement on campus as a student. Carlton also maintains three jobs along with her success in the pool and classroom: lifeguard at the local YMCA, teaching assistant for Dr. Judy Beck in PHYS 131, and works in-game management running cameras & helping produce home contests for ESPN+. Upon graduation, Carlton hopes to attend graduate school and continue her education in Applied Physics or Astrophysics.

In the pool, Carlton played a crucial role in Asheville completing its season undefeated (8-0). She never lost a 50 or 100 free race during the dual meet campaign. Earned an NCAA Provisional Cut with a time of 22.72 in the 50 free, won the silver medal at the CCSA Championships in the event where she reset the program record, anchoring the 4x50 free relay in 22.23.

In the 100 free, Carlton went 50.91 setting her personal best, at CCSA Championships and earned sixth place in the event, anchoring the 4 x 100 free relay in 50.05. In the 200 free, she set a personal-best time of 1:51.94 and finished 16th at the CCSA Championships.

Lastly, in the 50 fly, Carlton posted a split time of 24.30 on the 200 medley relay leg and helped earn a third-place finish for the team at the conference meet.

Carlton was also named the CCSA Swimmer of the Week twice during the 2021-22 season and was named the Zaxby's Bulldog of the Month twice as well.
