Longwood uses a fast start to end Asheville’s run in the Big South Tournament

03.05.2022 | Women's Basketball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 2 seed Longwood used a fast start to end the UNC Asheville's women's basketball team's memorable run in the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday evening in Charlotte by a score of 81-56. The loss brings Asheville's 2021-22 season record to a close at 10-22.

In her final game as a Bulldog, Nadiria Evans scored 22 points to go with six rebounds. Kai Carter added 12 points, and Jordaynia Ivie chipped in 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Asheville. For Evans, her 22 points on Saturday brought her career point total to a close at 1,846 points, which ranks 10th on the Big South's all-time scoring list.

"I thought we had a great few days here in Charlotte," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "I wish we would've gotten off to a better start. Credit to Longwood as they came out on fire. They had a good game plan on how they wanted to attack us offensively and defensively."

Longwood came out firing on Saturday, knocking down its first four 3-point attempts in the contest. Overall, the Lancers shot 58 percent in the frame and totaled 26 points in the opening frame. Asheville, meanwhile, did not have much luck going 3-for-16 from the field in the first 10 minutes. With this disparity, Longwood led after one quarter, 26-10.

The Lancers cooled off a bit in the second quarter. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs still had trouble getting shots to fall to take advantage and cut into the deficit. Longwood, however, found a spark again to close out the first half rattling off an 11-1 run to extend its lead to 30 points over the Bulldogs, 49-19.

Asheville fared much better in the second half as it outscored the Lancers by a score of 37-32. The Bulldogs were particularly productive late in the game, notching a 12-0 in the final four-plus minutes. Evans was incredibly productive, scoring 14 of her 22 points in the second half to lead the way. Carter chipped in eight, and Jordaynia Ivie added five points. However, the lead that the Lancers built up in the first half stood up, and they punched their ticket to Sunday's championship game, 81-56.

In a brief look ahead, the Bulldogs will lose Evans to graduation but is scheduled to return the rest of the team for the 2022-23 campaign.
