Track & Field heads to Johnson City for Buccaneer Invitational
02.03.2022 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they compete at the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational from the Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome) in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Last Time Out – Asheville was last in action on January 21-22 at the Keydet Invitational. At that competition, the Bulldogs logged several podium finishes, nine first-place nods, and one indoor school record fell over the two-day meet.
Note from Coach – "After two weeks of training, our team is anxious to get back to competition, and I believe this return trip to ETSU will probably be larger in terms of the number of teams competitors present," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "This meet will also have preliminary races for 200m and 400m, unlike our first meet in Johnson City. It's yet another opportunity for our student-athletes to see what they are capable of."
Near the top of the Big South – As the calendar turns to February, the Bulldogs are gearing up for the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships that will be held on February 24-25 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Currently, Asheville has a few student-athletes that rank near the top of the Big South in their respective events. Claudia Prieto ranks second in the triple jump (12.38-meters) and fourth in the long jump (5.92-meters), while the duo of Solomon McDonald (18.06-meters) and Jack Choiniere (17.12-meters) rank second and third on the conference's performance list in the shot put.
About the Meet – A total of 27 teams and nearly 1,000 student-athletes will compete in Johnson City this weekend. Asheville will be joined by fellow Division I schools Alabama A&M, Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Tennessee Tech, and other regional schools King (Tenn.), Mars Hill, Milligan, Tennessee Wesleyan Tusculum, Carson-Newman, Lees-McRae, Lincoln Memorial, and Emory & Henry. The first event for the Bulldogs on Friday will begin at 10:30 a.m., while Saturday's action will resume at 9 a.m. For the complete meet schedule, click HERE.
How to Follow – There will be live results available for following throughout the two-day meet, which can be found HERE.
