ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Athletics announced Wednesday that Hall of Fame ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian will be this year's guest speaker at "Baseball Night in Asheville". "Baseball Night in Asheville" is set for January 20 at 6 p.m. from Highland Brewing Company.
Kurkjian has enjoyed a long career covering Major League Baseball that spans four decades. He began his career as a writer at the Dallas Morning News in the early 1980s covering the Texas Rangers before moving on to the Baltimore Sun to follow the Baltimore Orioles. After his stop in Baltimore, Kurkjian moved on to a post at Sports Illustrated before taking his current position at ESPN.
Since joining ESPN in 1998, Kurkjian has been a mainstay in the company's baseball coverage both as a writer and reporter. He has made regular appearances on Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter along with adding his analysis and insight on the network's baseball broadcasts throughout the season.
Late in 2021, Kurkjian was honored for his work through the years as he was named the 2022 BBWAA Career Excellence Award winner. This is an honor presented annually to a writer "for meritorious contributions to baseball writing."
