HIGHLIGHTS

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
The UNC Asheville men's basketball team opened its home schedule with a 94-46 victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. With the win, the Bulldogs move to 2-0 on the season, which marks the program's first 2-0 start since 2008.

"Whenever we can accomplish something that hasn't been done in a while it means a lot," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mike Morrell afterward. "It was a good week for us. I thought we were better Monday night than we were today, and you have to credit Brevard for that. I think there's a lot of good to be taken from this game. Plus it's always good to protect your home court and start the home schedule 1-0."

Asheville operated very efficiently on offense in Saturday's win. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 61.4 percent from the field on the day which marks the third time in the past two seasons that Asheville has shot 60 percent or better in a single game.

"We got the ball around the rim a good amount and were able to get out in transition," Morrell added. "We got Tajion and Fletcher some good looks and they saw a few go down."

The duo of Tajion Jones (5-for-8 from the field) and Fletcher Abee (5-for-7) led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 points each on Saturday. Jamon Battle (5-for-5) added 13 points as well to go with a team-high seven rebounds, while Nick McMullen (3-for-4) also reached double figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds.

After the Tornados got on the board first under a minute into the game, the Bulldogs reeled off a 21-0 run to swing the momentum. The Bulldogs kept pressuring Brevard, which translated into 11 turnovers into 13 points for Asheville in the first half. Asheville shot an impressive 67.7 percent from the field in the half on its way to the locker room with a 57-22 lead.

Asheville's offense cooled off a bit in the second half but still outscored Brevard 37-24 in the final 20 minutes. Newcomer Alex Caldwell made his UNC Asheville debut on Saturday and led the Bulldogs with seven points in the second half as they finished off the 94-46 victory over the Tornados.

The Bulldogs will return to action next weekend in Atlanta, Georgia where they will compete in a three-day multi-team event called the Capitol Classic. Asheville will take on Texas A&M Commerce (Friday @ 8:30 p.m.), Eastern Kentucky (Saturday @ 5:30 p.m.), and host Georgia State (Sunday @ 3:30 p.m.) at the event. All three games are scheduled to air on ESPN+.
