ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A two-year contract extension for Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone was recently approved by the University of North Carolina Asheville Board of Trustees Executive Committee. This will keep Cone as the leader of Bulldog Athletics through at least May 31, 2025.
"I was pleased to submit to the Board of Trustees an extension of Janet Cone's contract," said Chancellor Nancy J. Cable. "During her already considerable time at UNC Asheville, Janet has been a constant and driving force, consistently building forward momentum. Her leadership, especially through the challenges faced during the last several years, has been truly exemplary."
Cone, now in her 19th year, is currently the longest-tenured athletic director in the Big South Conference.
"I would like to thank Chancellor Cable and our Board of Trustees for their support, trust, and confidence," said Cone. "I remain humbled to serve UNC Asheville in such a meaningful role and am grateful to everyone who has been part of our journey these last 19 years. With our dedicated student-athletes, coaches and staff, I look forward to continuing the work we have undertaken together to build Bulldog Athletics."
Committed to the holistic development of all Bulldog athletes, Cone added, "This announcement is an endorsement of all who contribute their time, talents, and resources to develop Champions in Athletics and Leaders in Life."
Noting that her work is far from over, as evidenced by UNC Asheville's continued capital improvements such as the renovation of the Karl Straus Track and growth of opportunities for more student-athletes to pursue their academic and athletic dreams, Cone said that she has "never been more excited about the future of Bulldog Athletics."
Other current facility projects include renovation of the Greenwood Baseball and Soccer Fields. The most significant capital improvement for Bulldog facilities overseen by Cone is the opening of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which houses Kimmel Arena. Sports programs have also expanded under Cone's leadership, with the addition of Women's Swimming & Diving as well as Women's Golf as the 15th and 16th Bulldog teams.
Beyond her work at the University, Cone also helped create the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, which attracts national events to the local community. The recent Billie Jean King Open that featured the United States vs. Ukraine in women's tennis is just one example. As well, she has served as a former chair and continues to be a founding board member of the Commission.
On a national level, Cone currently serves as first Vice President of NACDA's DI-AAA Executive Committee and recently completed a stint on the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Selection Committee as well.
For her many efforts and accomplishments, Cone was honored with the 2019 NACDA Builder's Award and the 2013 Under Armor Athletic Director of the Year.
