ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday as it pays a visit to Longwood in another Big South matchup. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Lancers is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be watched on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville fell to USC Upstate by a score of 66-53 last Saturday. The Bulldogs are now 6-7 overall, and 1-1 in Big South play with the loss.
No Stopping Nadiria – Fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans finished with a team-high 28 points in Saturday's contest at Upstate. It marked the sixth time this season that Evans has netted 20-plus points in a game. Jade Compton (Presbyterian), Kyle McMakin (Longwood), and Akila Smith (Longwood) are next on that list among Big South players, with all three players having four 20-plus point outings so far in 2021-22.
Rebound, Rebound, Rebound – A strength for Asheville this season has been its work on the glass. Currently, the Bulldogs lead the conference in both rebounds (497) and rebounds per game (38.23). Furthermore, Asheville's rebound total of 497 ranks 89th in the nation.
On the road again – Wednesday's matchup at Longwood will be Asheville's ninth road game this season. So far, the Bulldogs have held their own away from Kimmel Arena, sporting a 3-5 record with victories over Western Carolina, Wofford, and East Tennessee State. Collectively, the Bulldogs have done their best work late in those away contests as they have outscored their opponents 153-144 in the fourth quarter.
About Longwood – Despite having a sub-.500 record (5-8), Longwood enters Wednesday's matchup with Asheville riding a wave of momentum. The Lancers downed North Carolina A&T (76-45) and Presbyterian (83-78) in their first two Big South games, and they are the lone team in the league with a 2-0 record after one week of action.
Series Rewind vs. Longwood – Asheville and Longwood have met 23 times over the years, with the Bulldogs coming out on top in 15 of those contests. These two programs matched up three times last season. The Bulldogs won both games played at Kimmel Arena (74-69, 68-52), but Longwood bested Asheville in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament, 83-69.
