Swim & Dive gets off to a good start vs. Liberty/Campbell

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving team got off to a good start in its double dual meet against Liberty and Campbell Friday evening. Overall, the Bulldogs tallied five event victories and placed first or second in eight of the 10 events contested on the day.

"We had an awesome first day of racing, this team is incredible at feeding off each other's energy and using it in the pool," said senior Marlee Burgess. "As a senior, it never gets any less exciting than pulling out a best time. Tonight for me, it was in the senior relay swimming the 50 free; I am so excited to see what else this team can do!"

After beginning the night by winning one of the first six events, the Bulldogs caught fire and closed the evening by winning four straight events to put themselves into a good position heading into Saturday.

Junior Delaney Carlton led the way for the Bulldogs by winning a pair of individual events (50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle). Carlton clocked in 22.94 in the 50y free, which was just .01 shy of matching the school record that she also holds. In her 200y freestyle outing, Carlton paced the field with a time of 1:51.94, which ranks as the sixth-fastest ever put forth by a Bulldog.

In addition to her work in individual events, Carlton teamed with fellow Bulldogs Abby Parks, Nora Segurola Larrinaga, and Jessie Frank to cap the evening with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.60).

Between Carlton's win in the 200y free and the relay victory, Asheville also placed two swimmers in the top three in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly. Riley Edmundson (2:03.40) took the top spot in the 200y fly, while Segurola (56.19) did the same in the 100y back. Freshmen Chloe McDonald (200y fly – 2:04.97) and Grace Adams (100y back – 57.37) were not too far behind their teammates to pick up some critical points for Asheville.

In the diving portion of the evening, the Bulldogs had three divers compete in Jade Canady, Morgan Coughlen, and Jessica Brock. Friday, which was the 3-meter diving event, saw Canady lead the way for Asheville with 201.68 points, followed by Coughlen (201.53 points) and Brock (156.23 points). For Canady and Coughlen, Friday's point totals rank as the third and fourth-most in program history in a 3-meter contest.

"Really fun, day one of 3-meter diving," Canady said afterward. "Great to have the support of the entire team and each other to make a successful day. We are proud of one another and excited for 1-meter diving tomorrow.

On the scoreboard after day one, the Bulldogs lead Campbell by a score of 151-32 but trail the host Liberty, 101-85.

Asheville will aim to notch its seventh and eighth victories of the season tomorrow as the double dual meet vs. Liberty and Campbell resumes. The action is set to get underway at 11 a.m., and fans can tune in on ESPN+.
